Applied Experimental Psychology course
Professor: Wendy Rogers
Teaching Assistant: Jenay Beer, Sara McBride
Description
School of Psychology Professor and Co-Director of the Human Factors
and Aging Lab, Wendy Rogers, taught the senior capstone course,
"Applied Experimental Psychology" this semester. The class
focused on developing design specifications for some product or system
to support Aging-in-Place. A "Panel of Elders" was assembled to serve
as subject matter experts and as potential clients for the class.
The following group chose to demonstrate their projects at this
event:

After consulting literature and a panel of elders, our senior
design
group became aware of several flaws in the design of prescription
bottles and labels. While the FDA has established guidelines for
some
of the content on prescription labels, no other stipulations were
found. Therefore, our project focuses on the problems older
adults have
with prescription bottle use, prescription label comprehension and
the
concerns these problems raise. We have compiled a list of
recommendations for changes the FDA could mandate in order to
improve
the usability and health literacy of prescriptions. Although
our
recommendations are tailored for healthy, cognitively intact,
older
adults with corrected to normal vision, we believe that by
following
these recommendations the FDA will be able to decrease health-care
costs
and benefit a wide range of prescription users.
